Margaret Twigdon

The battling life of Margaret Twigdon who at age 21 married Albert Oakes, this very small lady went on to have a large family. Out of 21 children she bore for Albert only 7 of them lived to be the co founders of this present day large number of us all, she loved Albert enough to set off with him to Peru; had she known what was ahead of her on this far away Country, would she have gone?

Well we all know she did and according to all the documents we can't imagine what the life of Margaret and her children endured. The long mule ride this 17 stone lady made, it had to have been weeks of a very sore bum to start with, and then at the end of this epic trek to find what?

A small white girl child whose name was Ruby had to be protected day and night, her story later. We have been told many stories by the children Albert and Margaret who became our Mums and Dads; we cannot in this day and age begin to understand what their life was like.

They are lost and found! Returned to England, no home, no work, what a nightmare for her. Albert then turns to Western Australia; Margaret packs her family up again embarked on S.S. Barribool to what! The unknown again, two of her daughters Rosina and Hilda married. Had the joy of granddaughters being born, Ethel, Mavis, Margaret, Ida and Rose a Grandson Guy.

Did the good times outweigh the bad for this wonderful Wife, I hope so as she was only to live 7 years in this Country, Margaret Oakes nee Twigden died at Margaret River Hospital on 13th June 1931 aged 61 years. This super woman is buried in Karradale Cemetery in an unmarked grave, nothing to say about her, just Oakes M on a slab of Granite.
